Motorola To Split In Two

Date: Sun, 14. February 2010 15:05:51
Hugh Pickens writes "The NY Times reports that Motorola plans to reorganize itself into two independent publicly held companies by the first quarter of 2011. The first company will own the Motorola brand and will include Motorola's mobile handset unit and home set-top box business. This new company will focus on the 'three screens' lifestyle envisioned by carriers like ATamp;T and Verizon, where customers would watch content on TV, on their computers, and on their mobile phones. The other company emerging from the split will include Motorola's wireless networking business and its enterprise radio systems operations. The wireless networking business would likely be sold off, leaving the second company with its profitable enterprise radio systems business, which generated $7 billion of the company's $22 billion in sales in 2009."pa href="http://news.slashdot.org/story/10/02/13/146246/Motorola-To-Split-In-Two?from=rss"img src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=10/02/13/146246"/a/ppa href="http://news.slashdot.org/story/10/02/13/146246/Motorola-To-Split-In-Two?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/J4i8bVHgelFSjcNjZN-Z-X3ide4/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/J4i8bVHgelFSjcNjZN-Z-X3ide4/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/J4i8bVHgelFSjcNjZN-Z-X3ide4/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/J4i8bVHgelFSjcNjZN-Z-X3ide4/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/C_jL9OGH5dM" height="1" width="1"/

The Great Jobs Question: What if they don't come back?

Date: Sat, 5. September 2009 22:55:30
The implications of prolonged high unemployment-should it materialize-haven't been fully explored. People who don't have jobs don't acquire skills. Young college graduates are already having trouble getting work. High unemployment could depress wage gains for years. It could foster protectionism and long-term poverty. "In a tight economy like the late 1990s, firms are more willing to take chances on more disadvantaged workers," says Harvard economist Larry Katz. EPI's Lawrence Mishel thinks the effects on low-income families would be devastating; the child poverty rate could jump from 18 percent in 2007 to 27 percent.
